Medical records app problem corrected by SAP

An electronic medical records app from SAP was recently updated to prevent possible exploits, according to Computer World.

That source says that a flaw in the system could have allowed users to transmit false information about patients, as well as malware that could infect a mobile device. Although SAP reportedly tended to the issue already in February, knowing the possible risks could make it easier for providers to make more informed decisions about which systems are most useful, based on feasibility and planning.

The discovered defects impacted Electronic Medical Records Unwired, one of the apps offered by SAP to make patient data available for important tasks while supposedly keeping it protected. This solution offers data entry improvements and the ability for users to share textual and visual information among different entities.

ComputerWorld spoke to Alexander Polyakov of the security company ERPScan on the ways the unprotected app could have led to medical fraud.

"You can send fake information about the medical records, so you can imagine what can be done after that," he said. "You can say, 'This patient is not ill'."
